Fomitopsis pinicola, or the red-banded polypore mushroom, is native to North America and is found from Alaska to California. The native americans have used it for hundred of years as tinder, to help move fire or keep tobacco burning in their pipes. They have also used it as a medicinal mushroom, to stop bleeding, as a purgative, to relieve headaches and as a natural preservative.

The red banded polypore is a bracket fungus, growing on fallen trees or in the wounds of live ones, especially pine. It causes brown rot and functions to cycle nutrients. It grows in a woody bracket that is white to pale yellow when young, maturing to a brown color. It can grow for many years, adding a new tube every year. It is too tough to eat but can be made into a tea or added to soups to flavor the broth and add nutrients.
