The Luminous Porecap, scientifically known as Favolaschia manipularis, represents a fascinating species within the fungal kingdom, noted for its bioluminescent properties. This species was thoroughly described by Teng in "Fungi of China" in 1963, highlighting its unique features and establishing its place in the diverse world of fungi.

Morphological Characteristics

The Luminous Porecap boasts a cap ranging from 0.3 to 2.5 cm in diameter, evolving from a conico-campanulate to convex form with a distinctive conical umbo. The cap's surface, hygrophanous and reticulate, transitions in color from moist whitish to greyish or hyaline, eventually maturing to a pristine white or yellowish shade upon drying. The hymenophore of this species is characterized by its tubular structure, radiating in white angular-round pores organized in radial rows, each pore measuring between 0.5 to 1.5 mm in width.

The stipe of Favolaschia manipularis extends from 20 to 65 mm in height and 0.5 to 3 mm in diameter, presenting a hollow, hyaline to white complexion fully enveloped in a white pruina and slightly thickened at the base. The basidiospores, ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid in shape and measuring 6–8 by 4–5 μm, are amyloid and white, contributing to the species' reproductive distinctiveness. Additionally, the cheilocystidia, primarily sterile and ranging from 51 to 75 by 7 to 13 μm, exhibit a mostly diverticulate or irregularly branched apex, further defining the species' microscopic anatomy.

Favolaschia manipularis typically forms groups on dead or decaying wood and is primarily found from May to August. The species has been recorded in the Hanthana Mountains Range in Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, marking its first confirmed report from this location with molecular phylogenetic confirmation. Additionally, it is known to inhabit Australasia, Malaysia, and the Pacific islands, indicating a wide geographical distribution.

Bioluminescence

A notable feature of Favolaschia manipularis is its bioluminescent mycelium and fruiting bodies, contributing to the species' allure and scientific interest. This characteristic makes it a subject of fascination both within the scientific community and among enthusiasts of natural wonders.

Phylogenetic Relationships

Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS-rDNA sequences places Favolaschia manipularis within a context of 31 taxa, providing insights into its evolutionary relationships. The analysis, rooted with Mycena crocata, underscores the fungal species' unique genetic identity and its connection to the broader fungal phylogeny.

Significance

The discovery and description of Favolaschia manipularis enrich our understanding of bioluminescent fungi, offering new avenues for research into their ecological roles, evolutionary history, and potential applications. Its presence in Sri Lanka expands the known distribution of this intriguing species, emphasizing the importance of continued exploration and study of fungal biodiversity.
