Brown Oyster Mushroom Grow Kit from Out-Grow
This kit is designed to streamline the process of cultivating Brown Oyster Mushrooms at home. It is suitable for individuals who are new to mushroom cultivation as well as for those with more experience but looking for convenience.
About Brown Oyster Mushrooms The Brown Oyster Mushroom, scientifically known as Pleurotus ostreatus, is distinguished by its hearty flavor and firm texture. This variety is adaptable to various climates, which makes it ideal for growing in a range of indoor environments.
Contents of the Grow Kit
Included in the kit is a 6.75 lb block of fully colonized substrate comprised of supplemented sawdust, a material that provides the necessary nutrients for the mushrooms to grow. This substrate block is significantly larger than many on the market, ensuring a more abundant yield.
The Brown Oyster Mushroom culture within this kit has been developed through a process of genetic isolation, which involves selecting for desirable traits that naturally occur within the species. This process has resulted in a culture that is characterized by a rapid colonization of the substrate, a quick and dense pin set, and robust fruiting, which leads to an accelerated and increased harvest.
Instructions for Using the Kit
To begin the cultivation process, the front panel of the box, which is perforated, should be removed. This is done by opening the box and pressing on the corner of the perforated panel from the inside to initiate the removal, then continuing around the edge with your fingers.
Once the panel is removed, the top of the box is to be closed again. This is to ensure that light enters only through the front where the panel was removed. Next, an "X" is cut into the plastic bag at the front using a knife or box cutter. This area should be misted twice daily with water using the provided spray bottle, typically four to five sprays per misting. The kit should be placed in a warm location with indirect light and not in the path of direct heating or cooling airflow.
Mushroom pins should appear within one to two weeks of starting the process. After the pins develop, the mushrooms will mature quickly, usually within another one to two weeks, and then they will be ready for harvest.]
Harvesting Process
Harvesting involves twisting and pulling the mushrooms close to the base of the substrate block. Any residual substrate attached to the mushrooms should be trimmed off. Rinse the mushrooms before cooking.
Cooking and Storage
For best flavor and texture, it is recommended to cook the mushrooms soon after harvesting. If you must store them, dehydrating is the preferred method. Once dehydrated, store the mushrooms in an airtight container, such as a mason jar, to extend their shelf life.
Additional Harvests
The substrate block is designed to support up to three mushroom flushes. After the first harvest, the block should be soaked in water for eight hours to rehydrate it, ensuring it has enough moisture for a second flush. After soaking, the block should be drained for 10 minutes and then replaced in the box.
To maintain the moisture necessary for the second flush, the entire kit can be placed inside a plastic grocery bag, which should be tied closed. This should be checked weekly for new pin development, at which point the kit can be removed from the bag, and the misting process is resumed until the second harvest is ready.
Handling Mushroom Spores
Mushroom spores are a natural byproduct of the fungi's lifecycle. If individuals have allergies, it's advisable to harvest the mushrooms before they fully mature and release spores. Spores can be cleaned with a damp cloth if they settle on surfaces.
This kit is designed to provide an extensive experience in mushroom cultivation, with detailed instructions to guide users through each step of the process.
