Ganoderma lucidum, more commonly known as reishi, is an incredible medicinal mushroom that has been used in traditional chinese medicine for hundreds of years. It has been nicknamed the “king of mushrooms” and has been linked to longevity, better immune function and mental clarity. It grows in both tropical and temperate regions, making its distribution worldwide. However, it is extremely rare to find in its wild form. Thankfully, it has become increasingly cultivated as its medicinal benefits have become more recognized.

Reishi is a bracket fungus, growing in a fan like shape with a red color. When fresh, it is soft but has a very bitter taste and is therefore typically consumed in teas or other extracts. Commonly, it is dried after harvest, ground up and then made into tablets or capsules. Reishi grows on stumps or at the base of deciduous trees such as maple. It can be cultivated by using a sawdust substrate, grain or wood logs.
